Benjamin Moore just announced choosing white as color of the year 2016. A bold choice? Perhaps, taking into consideration the announcement comes from a company with a pretty amazing array of color choices in their palette. That said, white on white decor has been a trend for years. Unlike other trends from the past, you can't go into any social media sites that feature decor without continuing to see white on white rooms.
We live faster paced lives with images on everything from our daily visits to social media sites to our very phones. White offers a sanctuary to the eye. It can be calming, relaxing and energizing all at once.
I have had white on white rooms going back to my single days apartment in NYC. And yes, that does go back to earlier then the beginning of the trend (!)... As an artist living with color in and out of my head 24/7 white has been a loyal friend and not just for contrast but loving how the hues play in the light. Artwork using white as a main component can show all the subtleties of the color and can be challenging but the results can be beautiful.
Home furnishings in white have been around for a while, as have home accessories but it will be interesting to see if this new color announcement brings new ideas on how to incorporate the color into our home decor choices. As an art studio, we can't wait to see how artists who follow color trends in the design industry will reinterpret their work adapting to a trend that doesn't seem to have an end in sight.
Benjamin Moore used these words as the narrative behind their 2016 color :
crisp white borders...
What will your narrative be?
(Just in case...I'm in no way associated with Benjamin Moore or getting paid in any way - this is just a comment on their 2016 color choice)
